Happy Thanksgiving!

November 24, 2010

Thinking about things that I am thankful for this year:

-Friends & family and their continued good health.

- Pleasant, yet unexpected surprises at the office.

- My new apartment and the good folks at Lowes, Home Depot & “Labor by Dad.”

- That I live in a country where a Muppet can launch a Facebook campaign to host Saturday Night Live.

- That a “rumor” on Twitter can lead to (at minimum) 48 hours of discussion of the myraid of ways that Hockey Player A could have a received black eye courtesy of Hockey Player B. (For the record, my leading reasons included a fight over a cell phone number getting changed to 867-5309, an intense discussion on whether Kelly Kapowski or Jessie Spano was hotter or whether or not the beer tasted great or was less filling.)

- That the Sabres are willing to check their dignity at the door and parade around in a plethora of 80s costumes all in the name of charitable fundraising for a teammate’s foundation. Just from looking at the photos of the night in question, it takes a brave man to wear Spandex leopard print pants (Stafford) in public. And an even braver man to wear nothing but a shirt and his tighty-whities in public (Peters).

- The stability (or stagnation, your pick) that Lindy Ruff & Darcy Regier bring to the Sabres organization.

- That the US government actually does pardon a turkey. And if the president pardons more than one turkey, he might get a reputation for being soft on turkeys.

- The predictability of holiday commercials. Its Thanksgiving Eve and the Folgers “Peter” ad and the Hershey’s Kiss holiday bell commercial have already started running. Both of these commercials are old, and yet comforting at the same time.

- The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I love the floats, the balloons & the deliciously cheesy lip-synched songs by artists that you have never heard of…and probably never will hear of again.

- You! This blog would be nothing without my readers. Whether you comment or not, I do appreciate you taking a few minutes out of your day to stop in and take a look around. Catch you back here after we all come out of our turkey comas.

Give Thanks

November 26, 2009

I’m thankful for….

My family

My friends

My job

Sabres hockey. I believe the best is yet to come.

The great people I’ve “met” through the Sabrelogosphere. There’s a lot of talented, funny and quality writers out there.

My fellow Buffalonians. To quote the great Toby Zeigler, “We win together, we lose together, we celebrate and we mourn together. And defeats are softened and victories sweetened because we did them together.”

Gel pens. Except when I accidentally smear the ink and end up looking like I murdered a Smurf.

Newspapers, magazines, radio and TV. I wouldn’t have a job if these didn’t exist.

Ryan Miller’s earnest forthrightness during interviews. Even when you can tell he’d like to cut a member of the media.

Paul Gaustad’s insistence on giving his all every game, never taking a night off.

HD TV. Hockey and football in HD is a beautiful thing.

Timmy Connolly’s puck handling skills.

Mike Grier’s calming influence on the team. It’s almost like the boys needed that Dad-like figure in the room.

The farce that is the Indy Racing League. It gives me something to rant about when hockey’s not in session.

Sandra Lee. She’s absolutely crazy with some of the stuff she comes up with, but she’s teaching me how NOT to cook, which is kind of the opposite effect of a cooking show.

The pleasant surprise that has been Tyler Myers this season.

Lindy Ruff’s impeccable fashion sense and dry sense of humor.

Drew Stafford’s Twitter.

Heck, Twitter in general. Where else can you spend an afternoon giggling over the #kylewellwoodissofat meme or the #unwrittenNHLbooks meme. Not to mention the knowledge I’ve gained about work related matters through Twitter.

Coffee. Even if the drive thru line at Timmy Hos turns everyone into absolute morons.

I hope everyone has a safe, joyous, restful and delicious Thanksgiving. Catch y’all on the flipside for tomorrow’s Sabres/Flyers game.

What I’m Thankful For

November 26, 2008

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, I present a list of what I’m thankful for this year (in addition to the usual health, home and family, that is).

- I’m thankful that Brian Campbell still manages to find a way to put his foot in his mouth. In an interview with the Chicago Sun Times, while discussing his return Wednesday night to San Jose, he made the following comment about the Buff:

Buffalo will be a little tougher,” he said. ”I’m glad we’re not going there this year, and hopefully a year from now if we go there, they won’t know who I am. That’d be fine by me.

Soupy, Soupy, Soupy. You played here for seven years. We’ll never forget you. Have you learned nothing from the returns of Danny Briere, Chris Drury, Michael Peca, Miro Satan and Dominik Hasek? We never forget!

- I’m thankful that pardoning a turkey doesn’t mean you’ll get a reputation as being soft on turkeys:

- I’m thankful that the NHL is still around 91 years after its inception.

- I’m thankful for each and every single one of the Buffalo Sabres. Oh sure, there are times I’d like to give each and every single one of them a good smack upside the head, but most of the time, I’m thankful for them.

- I’m still thankful for Mr. Golisano stepping up and rescuing the Sabres from oblivion a couple of years ago.

- I’m also thankful that the Sabres all genuinely seem to like each other and get along. We saw that this past offseason during the flurry of contract extensions, that each guy mentioned that he was glad to be in town, staying with the same group of guys.

- I’m thankful that the Sabres don’t have a locker room cancer. Or, if they do, he’s exceedingly well hidden.

- I’m thankful that the Vancouver Canucks put Roberto Luongo on the IR, allowing me to pick up another player for The Little Honkers.

- I’m thankful that I live in a great city with great people.

- I’m thankful that I work at a job that I love, with people that I adore.

- I’m thankful that the Sabrelogosphere contains some of the most witty, intelligent, observant and clever writers out there.

- I’m thankful for Darcy Regier. The fact that he runs one of the tightest ships in the business may make it maddening for fans during trade deadline day and UFA day, but the end result of that tight ship is that we can be pleasantly surprised by whatever deal results from Darcy’s quiet machinations.

- I’m thankful that Paul Gaustad looks good holding a puppy. Alright, so I’m not really thankful for Goose and puppies, I just felt the need to link to the post with the picture. (And was that puppy the runaway star of last year’s Catwalk for Charity, or what?)

- I’m thankful for the quick laughs offered by the Jeff Dunham Christmas Special. I especially enjoy Jeff Dunham and Achmed’s attempts at cracking up Guitar Guy.

- I’m thankful that Lindy Ruff has a sense of humor, even when things aren’t going right. RJ made a comment during tonight’s game that during a trip to Atlanta, they drove past a billboard that announced there are 200,000+ houses for sale in the Atlanta area. Lindy cracked that there would be one for sale up in Buffalo if the team didn’t start winning some games soon.

- I’m thankful for the complete insanity that is Semi-Homemade Cooking With Sandra Lee. Some of the stuff that Sandra Lee comes up with is just so out there and bizzare, that all one can do is just drop one’s jaw in horror. It’s truly appointment TV with my TiFaux.

- I’m also thankful for spell check, gel pens, wrist braces, clicky pencils, e-mail read receipts and FedEx.
