Can’t We All Just Get Along?

March 2, 2008

After reading these two columns by Paul Hamilton and John Vogl, I’m not sure what’s bothering me more: that journalists are arguing in front of their audience, or that Golisano won’t return reporters phone calls, especially if said reporters have pissed him off.

I’m not completely naive to think that all people talk candidly to all reporters all the time. But its especially disheartening to know that a titan of industry like Golisano has had his feelings hurt by a reference to him, Larry Quinn and Darcy has The Three Stooges. I’m also less inclined to believe that he didn’t think Drury was ready to sign last fall. Three Buffalo News sports reporters would not put their names on a story if they didn’t have their I’s dotted and T’s crossed. And as much as we all bitch about the News, they’re still an independent media organization.

Which leads me to my next point. I’m more inclined to believe that Schopp and the Bulldog would ask Golisano softball questions. They’re not (and the fans aren’t) stupid. WGR’s the home of the Sabres. They’re the only sports game in town since WNSA folded. They’re not going to risk a team’s broadcast contract just for the sake of “hard hitting journalism.” It would be very easy for the Sabres to pick up and move to another station if they so chose. Sabres hockey is ratings gold, both on radio and TV.

Its not cool that Golisano suddenly decided to show his face now that the season may very well be slipping away. When the team was winning and hot, you would often see Mr. G. in his box at the games. Now, he’s hunkered down somewhere. Its not a good image, and in light of all the contract hubaloo recently, its not a good sign that he’s not willing to come to the arena and interact with fans and take their crap (which, admittedly, Buffalo fans dish out in spades).

– I’m happy for Captain Pommerdoodle and Assistant Captain Roy-Z. These young guys have really stepped up the past couple of months. I’m kind of glad Lindy didn’t give a letter to Vanek, since he’s just stepped out of a slump. Putting a letter on him would just put that mantle of pressure back on him, which is the last thing he needs.

I was reading the sports page this morning, and Lindy’s anticipating that Miller will set the team’s record for games started (currently at 72). I’m worried about Crunchy. He’s admitted that he’s currently at his playoff weight, which is well below 170. Since he’s on the official roster at 166, I’m inclined to think that Crunchy’s currently weighing less than that. I would also like to point out that starting today, Crunchy’s tied with Marty Brodeur for the number of games started this season. However, Marty has a good 40 pounds on Crunchy (Marty’s listed at 215. He’s a Rollie Pollie Ollie.) , enabling him to play all these games and not look like he should be a poster child for Save the Children.

Did I really just write an entire paragraph about a goalie’s weight?
