John Vogl’s article in this morning’s Buffalo News had the following tidbit:

Sabres center Paul Gaustad, who was named to the U.S. team, has withdrawn from the event due to a sports hernia. He may have to have surgery next week, but is expected to be ready by next season.

“It’s really disappointing because my biggest honor in hockey was to get named to that team,” Gaustad said.

After reading Gaustad’s comments, I just want to give him a hug.

I really feel bad for the guy. A guy drafted in Goose’s position and with his lack of speed probably wasn’t supposed to have made the NHL. Lindy has said as much. But through hard work and perseverance, he made the NHL. Someone at USA Hockey noticed, and when the opportunity to name him to the team came along, they took it. That’s a really big honor, and its still something to be proud of, even if he doesn’t get to strap on the skates next month. (Someone had better make sure he gets a USA jersey with his name/number on it.)

But is a sports hernia the new injury du jour for hockey players? I can’t remember ever hearing about these injuries until 2-3 years ago, and lately it seems like everyone and their goose is getting one. At least Gaustad does have a nice long off-season to recover if he does have to have surgery, which is about the only positive to take away from this situation.

    Awww…Goose needs a snuggle!!

This really made me sad when I read it this morning. He’s been my favorite player for two seasons, and I was so excited to see that he was finally recongized for his hard work. I hope he realizes that even if he doesn’t get to play they still like him…they really like him (sorry, random Sally Field moment!)

Now, this unfortunate situation brings up two very important questions:
1.) Has he been playing with this hernia for a while? If so, he and Yo-Yo have been quite the troopers this season!

2.) Who on Earth will Pommers room with now? I know Staffy’s gonna be there, but it just won’t be the same!!
